The Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever wakes up and this world is his main concern, Allah will make him scatterered and shattered, and he will feel a sense of panic and loss and he will get nothing of this world except that which was already decreed for him. But whoever gets up and is mostly concerned about the Hereafter, Allah will cause him to feel focused and content, and will give him a feeling of being independant, and worldy gains will definately come to him".

This does not mean that we neglect our wordly affairs, rather our main goal should be the Hereafter. This Ramadhan, try to hold the pleasures of this world in your hands and not let them into your heart.

Allah is in charge which means we must follow the means and leave the outcome to Him.

The Prophet ﷺ gave us a perfect example. He said, "If you had all relied on Allah as you should rely on Him, then He would have provided for you as He provides for the birds, who wake up hungry in the morning and return with full stomachs at dusk." We are like these birds. And the birds never stand on one branch of a tree waiting for grain to come! The birds work is to do its best to find the grain; but providing the bird with the grain is Allah's work.

Therefore a believer should follow the means and leave the outcome to God. "When you have decided upon a course of action, place your trust in Allah, for Allah loves those who place their trust in Him" (3.159)

When God loves someone, He will draw him closer to Him by testing him with trials. The wordly life is worth very little, therefore if Allah deprives a person, guides him to repentance and bestows on him His mercy and paradise instead, then that is a great gift!

Trials vary but the response should be the same: patience and piety.

Patience comes at different levels.
1. Refraining from committing evil acts.
2. Refraining from complaining with your tongue.
3. The highest level is to refrain from complaining even with your heart.

This is called "beautiful pateince" as of Yaqub AS, who only complained to His Lord and refused to complain to anyone else. In any case, adversity does not last forever. "And behold, with every hardship comes ease" (94.4)

Sometimes we postpone the good we intend to do and say, 'I will do that tomorrow, next week, next month or next Ramadhan. I will do that when I get marrried, when I get a promotion or when the children grow older. Doing good is not a matter of having time. It is a matter of priorities. There is enough time to do everything we wish to do if we prioritise our time.

This does not mean that we should ignore the world, family, wealth, career, our desires of eating, drinking, laughing, singing and so on. The question is what is in the depths of your heart that recieves the most attention and concern?

The Prophet ﷺ spent many periods of isolation in the cave of Hira and in the masjid for Itikaaf. Every living thing needs a period of isolation before it can grow or produce. Such as seeds in the ground and embroys in wombs need darkness in isolation away from external factors. Similarly, a heart/mind needs a retreat in a mosque or a place that is isolated from people, to reach a state of enlightenment.

This temporary isolation takes the heart back to a true connection with Allah! Otherwise, faith remains like a seed that was never buried underground, and will never produce.

Some people journey to Allah only through regular prayers at fixed times, through zakaat when it is due, etc. We could however journey much faster if we learn how to transform our daily habits into additional acts of worship. For eg we may work only for salary but we can also work to give charity, perform Haj, support our families and so on.

One of the 7 people whom Allah will protect with his shade on the day there is no shade is a youth which grew up with the worship of Allah. This young person perfected the beginning of his life therefore Allah grabts him success in the end.

Say you are running a business and you make a loss. If you set it up by asking Allah's help then you have still gained. Maybe you gained a close friend who helped you during the time. You real success in the end may be from making a profit in another deal, reconsidering your plans or winning a friend.

The human standard of success and failure are usually based on finances or achievments. However in Allah's sight these do not mean anything. What truly matters is His pleasure in this life and the afterlife. If we refer to Allah in the beginning of Ramadhan and ask for His help along this journey to Him, the end will shine and Allah will be pleased, regardless of our gains and losses.

When we have an intention to start a spiritual journey, sometimes we feel we are unworthy of Allah's mercy. We might ask, does Allah's mercy and bounty stop when I stop performing good deeds? No. "If God were to take humans immediately to task for all the evil that they do, He would not leave a single living creature upon the face of the Earth" (16.61)

It is not a matter of deserving or earning Allah's mercy, but a matter of relying on His mercy despite ones shortcomings, which must be accomponied by repentance from mistakes. Our flaws, shortcomings and mistakes should not stop us from working, hoping and expectings Allah's mercy in Ramadhan.
