Description

HIJAMAH: THE FORGOTTEN SUNNAH!

Jabir bin Abdullah (Radhiallah hu anhu) narrated, “I heard the Prophet (Salallahu alihi wasalam) saying,

‘ if there is any healing in your medicines, then it is in cupping, a gulp of honey or branding with fire that suits the ailment, but I don’t like to be branded with fire.’“ Sahih Bukhari

Narrated by Abu Hurairah (RA), the Nabi (SAW) said: The best medical treatment you apply is Hijama. (Abu Dawud)

Darul Arqam would like to welcome our sister Naema who will be offering Hijama therapy at our premises.

What is Hijamah?

Hijamah is a form of complementary therapy that utilises a partial vacuum to create suction on the surface of the skin. The practice is more commonly known as cupping in the West as it often uses cups to create the vacuum.

Hijamah or Cupping therapy has been used by a wide range of populations and cultures throughout history and was also a practice strongly advocated by the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

There are two main types of Hijamah or cupping therapy: dry Hijamah and wet Hijamah.

The dry Hijamah therapy uses suction alone and causes round “hickey” type marks, often referred to as bruises but like a real hickey are generally not painful.

Wet cupping uses the same method but adds small superficial scratches or pin pricks which break the surface of the skin under the cups to encourage blood to be removed. This could be likened to a mechanical form of leaching.

Practitioners say that the benefits of Hijamah are many, among them detoxification of blood, stimulation of new blood formation, relief of inflammation and congestion. “As we age, we suffer from increased accumulation of toxins, stemming from poor diet and lifestyle, pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides, insecticides and other chemicals in our fruits, vegetables and meat, environmental pollutants and chemicals,”
